How to get PrEP in Orlando, and what it costs

A daily PrEP routine: prescription bottle, weekly pill organizer and a glass of water

PrEP is a medication that lowers your risk of getting HIV when taken as directed. You can start it at OIC Inspired in Orlando. What you pay depends on your insurance. If you do not have insurance, OIC Inspired also helps you get PrEP, and our team walks you through the options.

What PrEP is, and who it is for

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive medication for people at risk of HIV. Taken consistently, it can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission.

PrEP is for any sexually active person who wants to take charge of their HIV prevention. It is especially recommended for men who have sex with men, anyone with an HIV-positive partner, people who inject drugs, and those with multiple sexual partners.

PrEP options at OIC Inspired

  • Truvada: a pill taken once daily. A generic is available, which may be easier to get through some insurance plans.
  • Descovy: a pill taken once daily.
  • Apretude: an injection given by a provider every two months (8 weeks).
  • Yeztugo: an injection given by a provider every 6 months.

Your provider helps you choose.

PEP and DoxyPEP

PEP is for after a possible HIV exposure. DoxyPEP is a one time dose of doxycycline taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex to lower the risk of chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea. It is an off-label approach. Ask a provider if it fits you.

What it costs

There is no public price range for PrEP, so we will not guess. The cost depends on your insurance. OIC Inspired accepts many plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Florida Blue, Medicare, Medicaid and United Healthcare. Coverage varies, so call to check yours.

No insurance is not a reason to wait. OIC Inspired helps people without insurance get PrEP through assistance programs.

Help with cost

Ask our team which assistance program fits your situation. Here is what the site says about each.

  • Insured, but copays or deductibles are a problem: the Care Access Secondary Program (CASP) may help with visit copays, coinsurance, deductibles and lab draw fees. No proof of income is needed. You fill out an enrollment form.
  • Uninsured or between coverage: the Care Access Program (CAP) gives short-term access to testing, select services and medications, with a 90 day enrollment. It does not replace insurance. Care Navigators help with assistance program enrollment.
  • Sam F. Ewing Fund: the fund that supports these programs says it helps patients start and stay on prevention like PrEP.

The on-site pharmacy

OIC Inspired Pharmacy is in the same building. It offers competitive pricing and discounts, help navigating savings options, and free delivery. If your plan needs prior authorization, pharmacy staff work with your plan and your provider. That can take several days. Without insurance, patients with prescriptions from OIC Inspired providers get discounted prices.
